In Memoriam: TED Conference Co-founder Harry Marks
Harry Marks was best known as an Emmy-winning broadcast design artist, but he also worked with Richard Saul Wurman to create the first TED conference in 1984. Marks died in late April at 88.
The initial TED conference, which sought to bring together people from the converging worlds of technology, entertainment and design, was a hit with attendees, but was not successful financially. After a six-year hiatus, TED was relaunched and has become a much-imitated model for how to bring fresh ideas, in a short and pithy format, to a group audience. It also has spun out a number of ancillary events, including TEDGlobal, TEDTalks and the TEDx series of local, independently organized events.
